Family owned and
operated custom mill and contract logging
In 1922 Joseph Stephens and his son Merrill
set up a small, steam driven mill on 200 acres of family-owned
forest just outside of Vernonia primarily to supply local
ranchers, farmers and business owners with high-quality beams and
dimensional lumber for their building needs. 90 years later, with
a name change to Stephens Logging, the company's primary focus is
contract logging for private woodlot owners. The original mill has
been converted to electric, and still operates as a custom mill
specializing in single-tree wooden beams up to 12x18 inches in
dimension and up to 40 feet in length.
Still a family operation, Doug Stephens, grandson of Merrill,
runs the mill. Doug's wife Cathy (and her bulldog
Rusty) can be found almost every day answering phones and running
the office. Their son Brian Stephens is General Manager of Logging
Operations. Their daughter Brittany Stephens, a graduate student
working on her Masters in Forest Ecology, runs this website while
also working as a botany specialist at the Cascade Forest
Research Center.
Stephens Logging is an
environmentally conscious company, with a four-star rating from

Sustainability
- Ways we help
protect the environment -
- We perform a detailed site
analysis before every project to determine the most efficient
harvesting strategy that also minimizes environmental impact.
- Whenever possible we create our
own temporary roadbeds using processor slash.
- Rather than building a landing
for load-out we typically deck the timber as we go and load
out from back to front.
- Wherever the job requirements
and budget allow we prefer to mulch all slash and leave it
on-site rather than create burn piles.
- One of our main criteria when
purchasing new equipment is fuel efficiency and ease of serviceability.
- On clear days our mill and
business office operate almost entirely on solar power with
only minimal supplemental electricity from the grid.
- In the winter we heat our
facilities with hot water radiant heaters fed by wood-fired
boilers.
- Our custom-designed equipment
monitoring software tracks usage of every piece of equipment
and alerts our full-time mechanical staff when to perform
preventative maintenance, rather than wait for expensive
in-the-field breakdowns.
